Our Witkins come from a small shtetl in the Northwest corner of the Pale of Settlement called Zemaiciu Naumiestis. Our ancestors called if Neustadt, or New City. There exist tax and census records of our family there going back to an 1846 document called “Taxpayers-Unable to Pay”.
There are four Witkin males listed on that 1846 document. Izrael, who died in 1844, who is my ggggg-grandfather, his son, Leyb, and Gesel, who is the father of Pesach, who is at the top of our family tree.
